The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the spread of Ebola in West Africa an international health emergency. WHO officials said a coordinated international response was essential to stop and reverse the spread of the virus (WHO statement, 8 August 2014).
During this outbreak of Ebola, most of the disease has spread through human-to-human transmission. According to WHO guidelines, hand hygiene is the most important infection prevention and control measure1. WHO has recommended hand washing as a key measure in infection control since the skin is a routine source of infection transmission.
Mundipharma believes industry must play its part in the fight against Ebola.
To support the guidelines, Mundipharma has partnered with leading aid organization, Direct Relief to donate supplies of the Povidone Iodine® range of antiseptics to provide more than two million hand washes in Ebola treatment centres in West Africa.
To encourage members of the public to join Mundipharma’s efforts to contain the spread of the Ebola virus, for every new “like” on the “Infection Life Hacks” Facebook page available in Singapore, Mundipharma will donate one extra bottle of Povidone Iodine® to Direct Relief.
Infection Life Hacks is part of Mundipharma’s public awareness efforts to provide easy to understand medical information to the general public on infection-relevant topics from reputable sources (e.g. WHO, CDC etc.). Called ‘Spread the Word’, the campaign is focused on hand hygiene, and has been rolled out in Singapore and will be taken across the Emerging Markets.
